McGee's daughter woke her, telling her that intruders were in the house. McGee could hear noises made by the intruders, and so she retrieved a gun. When Tye appeared at the top of some stairs and appeared as if he was going to come down them to where McGee and her daughter were, McGee shot him, causing both intruders to flee.
