Laser Printers Replacing Traditional Production Line Printers in Mainframe/Midrange Computing Environments; New Protocol Converters Provide Seamless Connectivity From IBM Systems To QMS Crown Print Systems.

MOBILE, Ala.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 7, 1995--QMS Inc., the network printer company, has announced the formation of a strategic relationship with AXIS Communications Axis Communications AB (XSSE:AXIS) is a manufacturer of IT equipment, mostly known for its print servers and network cameras. According to its latest annual report, it has sold over 500.000 network cameras, thus claiming to be the world leader in that market.  to broaden its printer connectivity solutions for mainframe and midrange computing environments.

As part of the agreement, QMS (1) (Minolta-QMS, Inc., Mobile, AL) A manufacturer of laser printers founded in 1977 by Jim Busby. Initially involved with controllers for printing bar codes and labels, it entered the laser printer business in the mid-1980s and set numerous records.  is offering two products that enable enterprises to replace their legacy line printers with `plug and play' shared laser printers.

"Information systems managers are dealing with tremendous change in their computing infrastructures, as they integrate `big iron' with client/server systems, and they need peripherals that can provide the services their users require throughout this transition period and beyond," said Scott Chandler Scott Chandler (born July 23, 1985) is an American football Tight End for the San Diego Chargers. College career
Chandler played college football for the Iowa Hawkeyes.
, QMS director of Solutions Marketing. "These adapters `bridge the gap' between existing installed computing resources and the latest output technology, allowing corporations to upgrade to high quality document output with minimum cost and system reengineering."

The AXIS mainframe printer converters connect to the serial or parallel interface of the printer and then to the IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  coax or twinax host system. Utilizing the QMS print converters, IBM mainframe IBM mainframes, though perceived as synonymous with mainframe computers in general due to their marketshare, are now technically and specifically IBM's line of business computers that can all trace their design evolution to the IBM System/360.  and midrange systems can print from shared network laser printers, rather than the old, dedicated line printers.

AXIS Printer Protocol Converters

The two printer protocol converters QMS is offering, the AX-7 Cobra+ and the AX-3 Cobra+, are remotely configured from a system terminal with easy to use setup menus. The printer converters provide a full set of printing capabilities, including user-editable printer drivers and transparent data pass through modes.

The AX-7 Cobra+ provides ASCII ASCII or American Standard Code for Information Interchange, a set of codes used to represent letters, numbers, a few symbols, and control characters. Originally designed for teletype operations, it has found wide application in computers.  Coax connection for IBM 3270 mainframe systems and provide advanced features such as job separation, bar code printing, and printing of GDDM (Graphical Data Display Manager) Software that generates graphics images in the IBM mainframe environment. It contains routines to generate graphics on terminals, printers and plotters as well as accepting input from scanners.  color graphics. The AX-7 also allows 255 user-definable strings and 127 ASCII string substitutions, allowing a great degree of customizability. AX-7 Cobra+ printer emulations include IBM 3287 Model 1 and 2c, IBM 3268 Model 1 and 2, IBM 4214 Model 1, IBM 3262 Model 1, and IBM 4224 Model 2.

The AX-3 Cobra+ provides Twinax ASCII connections for IBM AS/400 and S/3X midrange systems. The AX-3 Cobra+ provides bar code printing, BGU/APF graphics, and IBM 3812/3816 laser emulation, including COR, duplex and FGID FGID Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders  font selections. AX-3 Cobra+ printer emulations include IBM 3812/3816/5219, IBM 4214 Model 2, IBM 5256, IBM 5224 and IBM 5225.

Both network boxes provide automatic switching between parallel and serial inputs making it easy to share QMS Crown multi-tasking print systems among multiple PCs and mainframe/midrange systems.

The AXIS AX-7 Cobra+ and AX-3 Cobra+ are available as options to the entire line of QMS Crown print systems.
