Las Vegas, Hong Kong Hoteliers Receive Top Honors.


DES PLAINES, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--November 4, 1994--Stephen Wynn, chairman of Mirage Resorts Inc., Las Vegas, and Onno Poortier, president of the Peninsula Group, Hong Kong, are the 1994 Hoteliers Of The World, as selected by the readers of HOTELS, the magazine of the worldwide hotel industry. The November HOTELS carries profiles of each gentleman.

Wynn, the Independent Hotelier Of The World, and Poortier, the Corporate Hotelier Of The World, will accept their awards in New York on Monday, Nov. 14 at 3 p.m. in the Jacob Javits Center, room 1A04, during the International Hotel/Motel & Restaurant Show.

Stephen A. Wynn, the 9th Independent Hotelier Of The World, has transformed Las Vegas from a gambling venue for adults into a multi-dimensional resort destination. Wynn's resorts include the Mirage, where a volcano erupts every 15 minutes, and Treasure Island, where a mock sea battle is staged nightly. Wynn said he intends to continue to build megaresorts where gaming will be just one of many attractions.

Onno Poortier, age 50, the 15th Corporate Hotelier Of The World, is a Dutch national who joined the company in 1979. He is at the center of the Peninsula Group, a division of Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels Ltd. Poortier has re-focused the direction of the Peninsula Group, presided over its growth, developed technology to provide ever-increasing levels of guest service and set new standards for how a luxury hotel should look after guests and owners.

The Peninsula Group manages 6 hotels (in New York, Beverly Hills, Manila, Bejiing and two in Hong Kong). A seventh is under construction in Bangkok.
