EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Kaiser Permanente Kaiser Permanente is an integrated managed care organization, based in Oakland, California, founded in 1945 by industrialist Henry J. Kaiser and physician Sidney R. Garfield.  remained atop the list, followed by Northrop Grumman Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) is an aerospace and defense conglomerate that is the result of the 1994 purchase of Grumman by Northrop. Led by Kaiser, health care providers are the largest sector on the list. The seven medical groups combine to employ 68,100 people.

The three largest grocery retailers bring that sector to the second position on the list, accounting for nearly 34,000 employees.

The third largest sector is banking and finance. Led by Bank of America's 12,200 employees, the three largest financial institutions account for 26,700 employees locally.

In addition to its new facilities, Kaiser is introducing an electronic medical record system throughout Kaiser Permanente Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  over the next two years. The system will make medical information immediately available to physicians and other health care providers. Ultimately, Kaiser expects the system to make more medical information available to patients themselves.

Kaiser was formed from the health care programs of the Kaiser group of companies in the 1930s and was opened to public enrollment in 1945. Its non-profit structure allows it to own and operate hospitals for members of its HMO HMO health maintenance organization.
