Largest Convenience Wholesaler in Northern Ireland Goes Live With EXE Technologies.

Grocery Wholesaler John Henderson Limited goes live with

hassle-free implementation of EXceed Fulfill software in its ambient

warehouse over a single weekend.

Global supply chain execution (SCE) leader EXE Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:EXEE) announced today that John Henderson Limited had completed the first phase of implementation of EXE's Exceed(TM) Fulfill advanced warehouse management system (WMS), which has been designed for high volume businesses. Significant business benefits are expected from the system in the coming months.

During 2001, John Henderson Limited was rated as number seven in the Top 100 companies in Northern Ireland and owns the SPAR and VG franchises in Northern Ireland as well as the VIVO franchise throughout Ireland, supplying almost 500 stores. John Henderson Limited is a family-owned business, which has been distributing food and grocery-related products to the convenience retail sector for over 100 years. Using a commercially available system marks a significant step and change for the organisation.

"We have a large in-house computer team of around thirty staff," comments Pat McGarry, operations director for Hendersons. "And the vast majority of our systems have been developed in house. However our stores are seeing greater levels of competition from the large-format retailers (such as supermarkets) and we needed to adopt world-class supply chain execution systems in order to stay in the game. It just wasn't sensible to try to develop and support that kind of system ourselves any longer."

Hendersons issued a procurement document to around forty software vendors and quickly chose EXE Technologies as the best fit for their business. "EXE was able to offer us a best-of-breed WMS that had many years of grocery best practice built into the solution," says McGarry, "We could take advantage of EXE's expertise in labor and task management and grocery-specific functionality, such as catch weight recognition, across all categories of food - ambient, fresh and frozen."

Pat McGarry and his team expect the EXceed WMS to address very specific challenges within Henderson's business. "We're looking to significantly improve our inventory processes by reducing stock on hand while improving on-shelf availability at our stores. We're also looking to significantly reduce picking errors and increase the productivity of our staff. The upshot of this will be enhanced bottom line revenues and scope for growth at Hendersons with a greatly improved level of service to all our stores" says McGarry.

To get the best out of the EXceed system, Hendersons undertook a detailed planning phase working alongside EXE prior to implementation. That included volumetric scanning of over 13,000 product lines so that the WMS could be populated with accurate product dimensions and weights - a process that will deliver considerable benefit to the business in terms of space utilization, pick accuracy and staff utilization.

The first phase of a three-phase implementation cycle was completed last week with the successful go-live of EXceed WMS in the ambient goods warehouse area. The chill and frozen produce areas are expected to follow in the coming weeks.

While it is too soon to tell how successful the EXceed system will be in addressing all the challenges at Hendersons, one early key success has been the ease of implementation. "We had our concerns," says Andrew Logan, director of IT at Hendersons. "The past experiences of some other companies had illustrated to us the possible difficulties, which could occur, in implementing a system into a business' operations, from other vendors. Thankfully, by contrast, we were simply stunned at the ease and speed of implementation of the EXE WMS. The warehouse went live over a single weekend and it was a complete non-event for the IT team - with no technical errors or issues arising from this implementation."
