15 All the top 15 firms reported decreases in revenue in 2009 compared with 2008.

Lane Kidd, president of the Arkansas Trucking Association, said, "We are beginning to see signs of recovery," though the trucking industry is now seeing a shortage of drivers.

Despite Cutbacks Continues to Rise

Public higher education in Arkansas, not unlike other sectors of the state's economy, experienced significant cutbacks in state appropriations during the 2010 fiscal year because of a larger than expected shortfall in state revenue collections. The rise in tuition wasn't enough to dampen enrollment, however.

21,406

Number of students enrolled in fall 2010 at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, the state's largest institution of higher learning, a 7.8 percent increase over 2009.

"Over the last decade, UALR has put in place a really fine, strong College of Engineering & Information Technology, which is really aimed at preparing people to work in a knowledge-based economy," University of Arkansas at Little Rock Chancellor Joel Anderson said in August.

$82.4 million

What the top 250 highest-paid employees of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences will take home in total compensation in the current fiscal year, which ends June 30.

$600,000

UAMS Chancellor Daniel Rahn and Dr. John Day, chair of the UAMS neurosurgery department, are the only two UAMS employees who have a $600,000 state salary.

50 to 8

Dr. Samer Elbabaa, a UAMS neurosurgeon, jumped from No. 50 on last year's list to on this year's list on the strength of a $100,000 raise to a base salary of $450,000.

$2 million

Since July 2009, 386 positions have been eliminated from the hospital, without layoffs, which reduced expenses by about $2 million a month.

Nonprofits See Changes

In September, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, funded by the Walton Family Foundation, gave a tour to media and members of the northwest Arkansas business community. In addition, introduced into the museum's permanent collection was a 1985 Andy Warhol titled "Dolly Parton," a 42-inch-by-42-inch paint and silk screen ink on canvas.

23 The number, among the top 30 organizations on Arkansas Business' list of largest nonprofits, that saw an overall decline in total assets.

3 The number of nonprofits that reported a loss of more than one-third of the value of their total assets as the full shock of the recession set in during the 2008 tax year.

Pierre Ferrari in October was announced as the new CEO of Heifer International, after Jo Luck announced in January 2010 that she was stepping down as CEO but retaining the title of president.

$425 billion

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., which had revenue of $408 billion in 2009, was on pace to do about $425 billion in 2010.

$4.2 billion

If all goes as planned, this will be Baldor Electric Co.'s last appearance on the list of publicly traded companies headquartered in Arkansas. On Nov. 30, the Fort Smith manufacturer of electric motors announced that it would be sold to Swiss power and technology company ABB in a deal valued at $4.2 billion. CEO John McFarland, who was already planning to retire at the end of 2010, will stay on to help with the transition.

$19.4 million

Wal-Mart CEO Michael T. Duke is the highest-paid public company executive in Arkansas with total compensation of $19.4 million in the fiscal year that ended Jan. 31, 2010. The highest-paid newcomer to the annual list of public company executive compensation was Brian C. Cornell, who earned $14.3 million in the 10 months after he was hired away Michael's Stores Inc. to run Wal-Mart's Sam's Club division.

J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. of Lowell will have anew CEO as of Jan. 1, 2011: John N. Roberts HI. Roberts, who had been president of the Dedicated Contract Services division, replaces Kirk Thompson, a 37-year employee who had been
