Business Editors & Health/Medical Writers

VACAVILLE, Calif.--(BW HealthWire)--March 28, 2002

Large Scale Biology Corp. (Nasdaq:LSBC LSBC Law Society of British Columbia
LSBC Large Scale Biology Corporation
LSBC Lone Star Bulldog Club
LSBC Lasalle & Bureau County Railroad Company
LSBC Lifesaver for Babies and Children (St John Ambulance, UK)
LSBC Lone Star Bit Company
) has been issued U.S. Patent 6,344,597 covering a fundamentally new plant species designated Nicotiana nicotiana (nĭkō'shēā`nə), any plant of the genus Nicotiana of the family Solanaceae (nightshade family). Most species are herbs native to tropical America, although there are a few North American species and several  excelsiana. The patent relates to novel plant species that have enhanced properties for protein production using LSBC's proprietary GENEWARE(R) technology.

LSBC now holds a proprietary method of crossing different species of Nicotiana to produce an interspecific in·ter·spe·cif·ic

) and other plant species related to tobacco. A total of 55 claims have been granted for the invention. A deposit of Nicotiana excelsiana seed as claimed in the invention has been made at the American Type Culture Collection American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) is a private, not-for-profit biological resource center whose mission focuses on the acquisition, authentication, production, preservation, development and distribution of standard reference microorganisms, cell lines and other materials for , Manassas, Va., with ATCC ATCC American Type Culture Collection, see there  Accession No. PTA-323.

Application Exemplified by New Collaboration

LSBC has developed a broad portfolio of functional genomics Noun 1. functional genomics - the branch of genomics that determines the biological function of the genes and their products
genomics - the branch of genetics that studies organisms in terms of their genomes (their full DNA sequences)
technologies applicable to plants of the genus Nicotiana and certain monocots such as barley, and ornamental and forestry species. As LSBC's functional genomics patent portfolio is strengthened, new applications of GENEWARE technology are being made available to selected industry collaboration partners.

For example, LSBC has entered into a research and development collaboration with Weyerhaeuser Company (NYSE NYSE

and loblolly pine loblolly pine, common name for the pine species Pinus taeda, found in the SE United States. . LSBC's patented GENEWARE technology will be employed in the development project.

"LSBC is proud to collaborate with Weyerhaeuser, the recognized industry leader in forestry research and conservation," said John D. Fowler, president of LSBC. "We expect this collaboration will provide new insights into fundamental tree biology."

Terms of the contract have not been disclosed.
