In a further step to change its corporate focus, Large Scale Biology Corporation (Nasdaq:LSBC) announced it would re-evaluate its fee-for-service proteomic contract research.

Kevin J. Ryan, LSBC President, said, "As announced in April 2003, a re-evaluation of our 2Dimensional gel fee-for-service proteomic research business with the potential for attendant cost reduction is entirely consistent with our previously articulated strategic shift from platform technologies and contract proteomic research in favor of developing and commercializing vaccines and protein-based pharmaceutical products." Though the Company's performance and deliverables under the contract has been in strict conformance with contract specified research protocols and timetables, discontinuance of the contract was for the stated convenience of the Government. Ryan's statement followed the announcement of the conclusion of the toxicoproteomic contract with the NIEHS effective December 15, 2003, after an agreed upon wind-down period.

Ryan further stated, "Long-term, proteomic contract research with uniform protocols may make economic sense, but multiple, small and varied contracts, collectively, may not make the best commercial model. Our re-evaluation, he continued, will consider, as well, our internal needs for proteomics tools in support of LSBC's research and development programs."
