Large Scale Biology Corporation Accelerates Proteomics Facilities; Expansion Expediting Partnered and Proprietary Programs.

Large Scale Biology Corporation (Nasdaq:LSBC) today announced that the company's build-out of its new 53,000 sq ft proteomics facility in Germantown, MD is expected to be completed during the first quarter of 2001. Robert Erwin, CEO of LSBC, stated that "the new facility will greatly enhance the company's proteomics capabilities, and establish the world's most highly automated center dedicated to quantitative proteomics."

Mr. Erwin commented, "Proteomics is core to the discovery of breakthrough drug targets and disease markers for our partners, as well as to our internal development plans. LSBC has pioneered the development and application of many of the tools that are now considered state-of-the art in the industry, including the automated ProGEx(TM) system. With the new facility, we will link our high-throughput quantitative proteomics with our proprietary gene function discovery and protein manufacturing technologies. We expect this expansion to accelerate our development of technologies and products for personalized medicine."

Dr. Leigh Anderson, President of LSBC's proteomics subsidiary, noted, "Our robotic system, known as ProGEx, places us at the forefront of protein marker and target discovery, providing one million protein measurements per week with enhanced resolution, quantitative accuracy and reproducibility. By the end of this year, we will have successfully completed the first version of the Human Protein Index(TM) (HPI(TM)), the protein equivalent of the human genome sequence. In the new facility, we will further extend the ProGEx platform and use it to create innovative new database products for disease and drug effects, both areas of vital interest to the pharmaceutical industry."

Thermo Finnegan will provide ion trap mass spectrometry (MS) systems and Brucker Daltonics Inc. will provide MALDI MS systems for high throughput processing. "Our MS facility will provide the industrial scale data output required to meet personalized medicine's demand for unique protein drug targets, therapeutics and diagnostics," commented Dr. Anderson.
