A veteran of the decathlon decathlon (dĭkăth`lŏn), in modern Olympic games, a contest for men held over two days and composed of 10 track-and-field events. , Cody Fleming is well-conditioned to the rigors of competing in multiple events on the same day.

But doing two events at the same time and four in three hours? That's a whole different trick altogether.

And that's just the half of it.

"At this time of year, it comes down to being healthy and motivated, and I'm both right now," said Fleming, 20, a sophomore from Reno, Nev., who finished second to teammate Brian Bartow in the decathlon at the NWAACC NWAACC Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges  multi-event championships last weekend.

Fleming, ranked No. 1 in the conference in the discus with a throw of 146 feet, 8 inches (his personal record is 154-0), will also compete in the high jump, shot put and triple jump Saturday.

"He's a field event junkie junkie Popular health A popular term for a person, usually an IV narcotic abusing addict, whose life is disorganized vis-á-vis family and societal structure, whose existence revolves around obtaining–often through theft, prostitution or other illicit ," Lane coach Grady O'Connor said. "He's used to heavy loads. He'll be able to manage it."

It's the same scenario on the women's side, as Mackenzie Winkle is also entered in seven events for the Titans.

Winkle, a sophomore from Waldport, will compete in the long jump and high jump finals today, and will run preliminary races in the 100 and 200 meters. On Saturday, she's scheduled for the high hurdles, triple jump and 4x100 relay. She might also run in the 4x400.

"She is very, very valuable to us because she is very productive," O'Connor said. "She is always volunteering herself to do whatever. But when she wanted to do the pole vault, I had to tell her to calm down."

Winkle ranks in the top five in the conference in each of those individual events, and is No. 1 in the triple jump with a school-record-tying PR of 37-5.

"My job is going to be to score as many points as I possibly can," Winkle said.

at the multi-event championships count this weekend as well. And though she didn't win the league title, Winkle, 20, set a school record with 4,698 points.

Winkle was recruited by Lane as a jumper and volleyball player, but her natural athleticism - she was a first-team all-NWAACC middle blocker in volleyball this year despite being only 5-feet-7 - made her a perfect fit for the heptathlon.

Last season, she was the top overall scorer at the regional meet with 36 points.

"I love it," said Winkle, who will be a heptathlete for Portland State next year. "I mess myself up when I think too much or overanalyze, so if I can quickly go from event to event, I do better."

O'Connor said both of his teams should contend for the regional title, but with the conference meet two weeks away, he won't push anybody to do more than they can.

Thus he is holding out men's sprinter Phil Alexander, the 2003 OSAA OSAA Oregon School Activities Association

"That hurts our chances a little bit," said O'Connor, whose form chart has Clackamas Community College Clackamas Community College (CCC) is a community college located in Oregon City, Oregon, United States. On the women's side, O'Connor sees an even battle between the Titans and Clark Community College.

For the women, Lane's Judith Barnett, a freshman thrower from North Douglas, leads the conference in the shot put and discus, while Kristin Brogdon is second in the high jump and Stephanie Carter is first in the region in the 3,000.

The men will open the meet in first place with 22 points gained from the multi-event meet, while the Lane women open in second with 13.
