Lane County Democrats rise to power.

Byline: David Steves The Register-Guard

Friday's announcement of committee assignments for the next Legislature handed plenty of power to Lane County lawmakers.

All but one of the 12 legislators whose districts include Lane County are Democrats - the party that took control of the House and retained a majority in the Senate in last month's election.

And while Lane County's politically blue hue kept its legislators on the back benches for much of the 1990s and early part of this decade when Republicans were ascendant, they now will share eight committee chairmanships among them. That will put lawmakers from Eugene Eugene, city (1990 pop. 112,669), seat of Lane co., W Oregon, on the Willamette River; inc. 1862. Prozanski will chair two panels, including a newly formed committee that will consider changes to the Measure 37 land use initiative. The Eugene Democrat said his goal is to ensure that the intention of voters who approved the 2004 initiative is carried out - while at the same time making sure the actual effects don't exceed what the public was led to believe would result.

"A lot of people are concerned and extremely upset at seeing a lot of these larger developments filed in the waning days of the application period," Prozanski said.

Measure 37 applies to property whose use is limited by laws or regulations adopted after the current owner or owner's family acquired it. Those with valid Measure 37 claims can seek compensation for the loss of value from such restrictions or to have those limitations waived.

Prozanski and the three other senators with portions of Lane County in their districts already have experience chairing committees. But in the House, chairing committees will be a new experience for the Democrats tapped to lead.

Barnhart said he'll spend the next three weeks boning up for the start of the next session on Jan. 8.
