With winter quickly passing, now is the perfect time to start thinking ahead--to summer vacation plans.

And with today's hectic schedules and an increased focus on quality family time, many people are seeking ways to "bring their vacation home," according to Mark Borst, founder and president of Borst Landscape and Design in Allendale, N.J.

During the past two years, Borst has observed a notable increase in the number of customers who are investing in their property to create unique backyard escapes rather than expensive travel and second homes.

"People want to stay home," he said. "In response, we are helping our clients make their outdoor spaces feel like luxury getaways--where they can spend time relaxing, eating and playing with family and friends."

Projects feature everything from pools and suntanning areas, to beautifully landscaped sitting areas and outdoor kitchens with built-in barbeques, sports and entertainment facilities, waterfalls and fountains. The possibilities are limitless, and while the budget for a project determines its scope, big changes can be achieved even with a modest capital outlay.

"We have completed comprehensive landscape redevelopments and elaborate outdoor living room installations," he said.

"At the same time, homeowners can achieve a backyard getaway with a small patio, built-in firepit and some of the trendy new outdoor furniture available today."

One of Borst's current, large-scale outdoor living projects involves a complete landscape redesign with terraces, an in-ground pool, lavish outdoor kitchen and a Florida room. Some of the upscale selections made by the homeowners include Colonial bluestone for the retaining walls and stairs; high-end grills equipped with infrared searing and options for both gas and charcoal cooking; a bar with a flat-screen television; and a freeform pool and whirlpool with remote-controlled systems and a fully retractable cover.

On a smaller scale, Borst recently made big changes to another home's backyard living space with the simple incorporation of two new outdoor gathering areas.

Using concrete pavers, the firm created a patio accessible from the living room and also expanded a three-foot walk around an existing in-ground pool to accommodate a sitting area and pool house.

Borst recommends working with a landscape architect or designer when embarking on an outdoor living project.

"A professional not only has the training and expertise to visualize the best way to approach a project, but also he or she can help to identify a property's positive attributes," he explained.

Regardless of the scope or challenge, a well-planned and executed project will result in an exciting new outdoor "getaway" at home, providing increased property value and an appealing space for entertainment, relaxation and recreation for years to come.
