The tales of the various expeditions, the weather and the discoveries, and most importantly the appeal of the immense ice continent itself make for fine reading. Landis goes most popular histories one better by describing the explorations of Antarctica's outer islands as well, and concludes with a fine chapter on whales and whaling.
