San Diego is a coastal Southern California city located in the southwestern corner of the continental United States. As of 2006, the city has a population of 1,256,951.
announced today that the Center has granted Lancell, LLC a $75,000 product development award for its vaccine acceleration technology. Additionally, CCAT has granted the company two business support awards that include a market study and commercialization planning assistance to facilitate business development activities. E[acute accent]San Diego-based Lancell is in the process of developing a molecular treatment that activates dendritic cells when applied topically to the skin over a vaccine injection site. The vaccine, combined with the Lancell treatment, activates strong, rapid T cell immunity and may also induce strong, rapid antibody protection that accelerates the vaccine's effectiveness. This treatment can be used with any type of current vaccine, as well as those that are under development (the much anticipated avian flu vaccine, for example). Additionally, Lancell's technology can be used to speed protection for inoculations against bioterrorist threats including anthrax and smallpox. E[acute accent]"Lancell's technology is critical because current vaccines work too slowly. An individual can be infected and the illness can take hold before the vaccine has had sufficient time to establish immunity," said Dr. Carol Cowing, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Lancell, LLC. "CCAT's support will play a crucial role in helping to get our efforts into clinical trials. If our endeavors are successful, the technology will be an inexpensive method of accelerating vaccination protection before the illness has the opportunity to take hold in individuals and spread among the population at large." E[acute accent]Funded by the Department of Defense (DoD), the CCAT program offers funding and business development to small business entrepreneurs, government labs and academic researchers to speed commercialization of technology needed by the DoD and the Department of Homeland Security Noun 1. E[acute accent]"The value of Lancell's procedure lies in its potential to induce rapid T cell and antibody immunity to every type of vaccine without costly individualized processes," said Tom Sheffer, program director for CCAT at San Diego State University San Diego State University (SDSU), founded in 1897 as San Diego Normal School, is the largest and oldest higher education facility in the greater San Diego area (generally the City and County of San Diego), and is part of the California State University system.  (SDSU) Research Foundation. "CCAT looks forward to working closely with Lancell to offer support in building their business and fast tracking their technology into the marketplace."
