NASHUA, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 18, 2000

Lancast Inc., the leading provider of intelligent network connectivity solutions, today announced the release of the AutoTwister(tm) providing extended distance capabilities to existing 10Mbps Ethernet Ethernet

Telecommunications networking protocol introduced by Xerox Corp. in 1979. It was developed as an inexpensive way of sending information quickly between office machines connected together in a single room or building, but it rapidly became a standard computer
networks. By providing media conversion and 10/100 rate adaption adaption

in a single unit, Lancast can extend existing copper-based networks up to 100km over fiber.

"As networks begin to extend beyond the traditional LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  and into the WAN, network administrators are confronted with the challenge of seamlessly connecting disparate 10Mbps LANs over long distances," states Don Garretson, vice president of sales at Lancast. "The AutoTwister can future-proof these networks by providing a path which supports the variable bandwidth needs in the media required by the user."

The AutoTwister not only auto-negotiates speed but is the only bridging product which also provides media conversion between copper and fiber in mixed media networks. The AutoTwister incorporates Lancast's new Link Loss Return (LLR LLR Lunar Laser Ranging

) feature for notification of a fiber failure to a management station. LLR stops the sending of link pulses out the transmit port when link pulses are not being received. LLR is enabled on one end of the link, typically on the unmanaged device.

Additional features offered by the AutoTwister include shared network segment isolation, auto-negotiation of full and half duplex (Computers) arranged so that the information may be transmitted in both directions, but only in one direction at a time; - of communications channels between computers; contrasted with full duplex(a).  configurations, and a lifetime warranty.

The AutoTwister is available as a stand alone unit or as an intelligent module for Lancast's Intelligent Media Converter A device that converts from one type of media to another. It typically refers to a hardware device that connects different transmission media; for example, from twisted pair to coax or from twisted pair to optical fiber.  7500 and supports a range of connections from 10/100BASE-TX RJ-45 through 100BASE-FX multimode ST. The AutoTwister provides seamless connectivity with all major switch and router router
