Per-Se Technologies Inc., through Per-Se Technologies (UK) Ltd., its Lincoln-based international office, today announced the signing of a contract with Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust National Health Service Trusts (NHS Trusts) provide many services of the National Health Service in England and Wales. They are not trusts in the legal sense but are in effect public sector corporations. .

Included in the agreement is a fully managed onsite electronic patient record (EPR) service, with Per-Se's award-winning Patient1 integrated EPR solution at its core. With approximately 1,300 beds, Lancashire Teaching Hospitals is one of the largest trusts in the U.K., serving nearly 400,000 people in the northwest of England and attracting a regional population of almost two million to specialty services like neurosurgery neurosurgery /neu·ro·sur·gery/ (noor´o-sur?jer-e) surgery of the nervous system.

Patient1 is an integrated, patient-centred clinical information system that optimises care processes across the continuum. It provides an enterprise-wide infrastructure that unifies lifetime healthcare and medical care record information into a single electronic health record to achieve the cost-effective delivery of quality patient care and clinical outcomes.

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals' Patient1 implementation is a broad-ranging, multi-site project being phased in over a three-year period to meet the Level 3 EPR deadline in 2005. The first priority will be to consolidate the merged Trust's new patient administration system (PAS) requirements with electronic case notes, radiology, A&E, theatres and pathology results. Subsequent phases include ward order entry and results reporting (with GP web access) followed by e-prescribing (with Patient1's unique proactive alerts), e-pharmacy and care pathways.

The Trust and Per-Se designed the implementation strategy to maximise benefit realisation opportunities for the Trust and will continually refine it to eventually touch all aspects of patient care. Per-Se brings to the partnership broad-based benefit realisation experience because it has implemented many similar EPR systems worldwide based on the principles of value-for-money and a cost-justifiable business case.

Len Slawinski, managing director of Per-Se's UK office, explained some of the background to the decision: "Lancashire Teaching Hospitals selected Patient1 after four years of evaluating EPR systems and their choice was based on several considerations. As a merging Trust with multiple sites, a major systems rationalisation was going to be needed, compounded by the fact that many departmental systems were reaching the end of their life cycle. Providing local and regional communication links for sharing patient information was another priority with five other acutes and 12 community facilities in the vicinity, as well as up to 25 Trusts in the catchment catch·ment

 for speciality services."

Said Karen B. Andrews, president of Per-Se's Application Software division: "We are extremely pleased to have been chosen to partner with such a prestigious healthcare organisation in the development of this landmark EPR programme. We believe our Patient1 EPR is a clinical solution uniquely suited to the needs of the NHS NHS

modernisation agenda, and we look forward to working with Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in providing a beacon to others. This contract is also a first step in our UK-wide initiative to put EPR solutions within the reach of most Acute Hospital Trusts by offering value for money alongside the highest quality provisioning."
