Lakers squeak by Colts.

Byline: JOE LODLE The Register-Guard

SPRINGFIELD - Making the state girls soccer playoffs has not been a common occurrence for Thurston.

In fact, assistant coach Steve Morelock said the Colts had qualified only once before, and that was at least nine years ago.

But Thurston, the Midwestern League's No. 4 seed, showed how much its program has improved on a sunny but blustery blus·ter

The Colts suffered a scare in the first minute of play when Kelly Sutherland went down with a leg injury, but the junior midfielder

Lake Oswego, the No. 4 seed from the Three Rivers Three Rivers, Que., Canada: see Trois Rivières.  League, outshot Thurston 24-3, but the only shot that got inside the goal came in the 75th minute when freshman Megan Watson scored off an assist from sophomore Cecily Northup.

"We were ready, and we got better at what we wanted to get better at during the last month," Colts coach Doug Piquette said. "The first half was probably the best half that we've played since I've been here."

The Lakers made some adjustments and played better in the second half.

"They really took control of the midfield mid·field

"Thurston pressured us out of our game. I don't think it was one of our better matches. Our team play and possession game weren't very good," Lakers coach Dominic Yambasu said. "But, it's the first match of the playoffs and Thurston was a good team out there. They hustled hard."

Piquette singled out the play of senior midfielder Stephanie Padilla and junior goalkeeper Jessica Cardwell among the many good efforts by his team.

"We made some mistakes and got away with most of them," said Piquette, who took over the Colts in midseason on an interim basis. "There's not a girl on our team that didn't get better this year.

"We learned how to be a team."
