DAY 1

Start with the lake: Even in the dead of winter the largest alpine lake in North America (12 miles wide, 22 miles long) never freezes. Climb on board the Tahoe Queen boat for a two-hour-plus excursion to must-see Emerald Bay; it departs every day at noon in ski season.  load: Before heading out for a day on the slopes, head to one of South Lake Tahoe's many breakfast eateries. Heidi's Family Restaurant is a bit of a greasy spoon, but its kitsch value and hearty menu, including pancakes, fruit crepes, Belgian waffles, and the ever-changing "kitchen sink omelet," make it a must. Open seven days 7 A.M. to 2 P.M.

Adventures al fresco: At Heavenly Mountain Resort there are 91 trails ideal for skiing, snow tubing, and even snow biking. The mammoth resort boasts nine different peaks and the West Coast's largest vertical drop. For the less valiant traveler, the eight-passenger Heavenly gondola zips passengers from the south shore's downtown area up to Heavenly's mountaintop moun·tain·top

Get out: South LakeTahoe is definitely not a sleepy ski town. Put your poker face on and head over to Harveys Lake Tahoe Harveys Lake Tahoe is a resort located in Stateline, Nevada. The hotel has 740 rooms and suites, as well as six restaurants, and a casino with 87,500 square feet of space. The hotel also has a wedding chapel, pool, convention center, and a full-service health club.  Casino and Resort. Need a good laugh after losing your savings? Then dance the night away at Faces, Tahoe's only gay bar, where the drinks are cheap and the music is thumping.

DAY 3

Oh, what fun: Dash through the snow to the family-run Borges Sleigh sleigh: see sled.  and Carriage Rides, which offers horse-drawn sleigh rides for $20 a person. The sleigh driver will point out local landmarks on the way to an overlook that offers spectacular views of Lake Tahoe.

Wild, Wild West: Get a taste of the Old West in neighboring Carson City, a 45 minute drive from South Lake Tahoe. Once a booming silver-mining town, Nevada's capital city is loaded with historic charm. Don't waste daylight--mosey on clown to the downtown's boutiques, shops, cafes, and museums.

Dine & dash: Before you leave South LakeTahoe, don't forget to stop at Evan's American Gourmet Cafe (536 Emerald Bay Rd., 530-542-1990). A charming 1930s-vintage cabin, the family-run eatery is incredibly popular among Tahoe's local set, so it's definitely wise to make a reservation. The menu is populated with some of the best meat and seafood dishes in town. Open seven days from 5:30 P.M.

BONUS DAYS

Backwoods romp: If it's a quiet commune with Mother Nature you're seeking, try an extra day in North Lake Tahoe. In stark contrast to the commotion of South Lake Tahoe, the wilderness reigns supreme along the lake's north shore.

Reno 411: "The biggest little city in the world," just one hour away from Lake Tahoe, is the perfect destination for a lively day. The city's restaurants, museums, art galleries, and casinos will keep you busy during the day. And its gay bars--including The Patio (downtown), Revol Again, and Tronix (both on Kietzke Lane) along with Carl's Pub and the Ten 99 Club (both on Virginia Street)--are open late.

GETTING THERE The nearest airport is the Reno-Tahoe International Airport Reno-Tahoe International Airport (IATA: RNO, ICAO: KRNO, FAA LID: RNO) is a public airport located three miles (5 km) southeast of the central business district of Reno, a city in Washoe County, Nevada, United States.  (1 1/2 hours away), which serves such major carriers as American, United, Northwest, and Southwest airlines. Travel to South Lake Tahoe from the airport can be treacherous; heavy snows can leave the area's roads impassable. To avoid the headache, there are a variety of shuttle services available.
