Lagasses add a dash of excitement to Lynn Meadows Discovery Center theater capital campaign. (Southern Scrapbook).

The WINGS Performing Arts and Education Center for Children, which will be housed in a gymnasium adjacent to the museum, will be the first of its kind in the state, museum officials said. "Alden and I wanted to be involved with the Lynn Meadows Discovery Center because we admire everything the Discovery Center stands for, and because of Alden's connection with Lynn Meadows," Lagasse said. "It's about the future of children--educating and enriching the lives of kids and giving them opportunities to grow."

Situated in a converted early 20th-century school building on six acres in Gulfport, the Discovery Center features state-of-the-art, interactive experiences for children. The center has drawn more than 330,000 visitors since opening in 1998 and has been named one of the top 50 children's museums in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. . Alden Lagasse, a Gulfport native, was a friend of Lynn Meadows.

"Our kids deserve the best, and that's what we're going to give them," said center director Betsy Grant.

Under the guidance of Gulf Coast actress and drama instructor Tonya Hays, the center's WINGS Performing Arts Program students write, perform and produce at least three theatrical productions a year. The program offers young people ages three to eighteen lessons in acting, voice, dance, and violin, as well as technical design and stagecraft stage·craft
