A March 2004 seminar considered two themes which are the most controversial labor policy issues in most advanced countries: the scope of labor law and the notion of the employee, and mechanisms for establishing and changing terms and conditions of employment. Papers from the seminar, submitted from the US, Europe, and Japan, emphasize recent and ongoing changes in their countries' labor laws and evaluate factors that have contributed to such changes. Each author concludes that reform of traditional labor laws is needed, and the book as a whole demonstrates that the content of such reform differs from country to country. There is no subject index.
