Labor unions: ranked by L.A. County membership.EXECUTIVE SUMMARY THE 25 largest labor union locals in L.A. County have a total of 543,000 members as of 2006, the most recent year for which data is available. This figure is up slightly over 2005. Local chapters of the Service Employees International Union dominate the list with the greatest number of members. The largest is SEIU United Long-Term Care Workers 6424, with more than 100,000 members in the county. SEIU 721 was formed this year when the union reorganized most of the public sector locals in California. The new local's charter allowed seven organizations--347,535,620, 660 700, 998, and 1997--to unite and form a larger force representing more than 85,000 government workers throughout Southern California. Entertainment industry workers are represented by five organizations on the list, led by the Screen Actors Guild with 70,000 members in the county. The entertainment industry has been a focus of labor strife due to the Writers Guild of America strike. Two law enforcement agencies appear on the list. The Los Angeles Police Protective League counts approximately 9,000 members, while the Association for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs has 7,000. [GRAPHIC OMITTED] THE PACESETTER SERVICE Employees International Union Local 6434, which represents home care and nursing home workers, has 122,000 members in L.A. County. The local is the second largest local in the nation with more than 190,000 members throughout California. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] The local used to be known as SEIU 434B, but joined with other similar locals throughout the state last year to achieve a greater economic impact. Unlike some other unions, the local only represents one type of worker. Home care workers provide a range of services, from part-time personal assistance to 24-hour supervisory care. SEIU began organizing L.A. County home care workers in 1987. It held its founding convention and delivered 12,000 union cards to the county's administrative office in 1988 and was chartered later that year. With millions of baby boomers retiring in the next 1520 years, the market for home care workers is expected to grow steadily. In the past, the local has focused on raising the minimum wage and supporting various ballot measures. One of the biggest issues facing the union is universal health care. The union is working with state legislators to find a way to create a health care plan that will cover the state's 7 million uninsured.
