A state prison is there. - Just as this school year began, next year will begin with a short burst of classes followed by a four-day weekend. Then they'll take a four-day weekend for Labor Day Labor Day, holiday celebrated in the United States and Canada on the first Monday in September to honor the laborer. It was inaugurated by the Knights of Labor in 1882 and made a national holiday by the U.S. Congress in 1894. , from Aug. 31 through Sept. 3. The four-day weekend was scheduled for the first time at the beginning of the current school year, and the School Committee last night agreed to continue it. Superintendent Carol L. Daring DARING Disaster Avoidance & Recovery Information Group said faculty liked it, and all three staff unions approved. Not everyone agreed, though. "It just doesn't make sense to me," said Committee member James Boone, who was the only person to vote against it. At his request, the School Department will send a survey out to parents this summer, asking if they like the schedule and want to keep it. |
