Labopharm Inc. today announced that it has received a U.S. patent on an enzymatically controlled drug The United Kingdom Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 aimed to control the possession and supply of numerous listed drugs and drug-like substances. The act allowed and regulated the use of some Controlled Drugs (designated CD) by various classes of persons (e.g. release system (ECDR ECDR Enhanced Call Detail Record ) to be included in its core platform technology, Contramid(R). Contramid(R) is a controlled-release technology aimed at improving the safety, efficacy and dosage of pharmaceutical products by maintaining an optimal concentration of the medication in the body for an extended period of time. The ECDR System includes the alpha-amylase enzyme within Contramid(R) tablet. Upon entry into the gastrointestinal tract gastrointestinal tract n. The part of the digestive system consisting of the stomach, small intestine, and large intestine. Gastrointestinal tract , the tablet picks up water and the enzyme is activated. It then results in a bulk erosion of the tablet and an accelerated drug release. This System is an additional mechanism of release adjustment and control. Its field of application is for active ingredients with particularly slow release characteristics such as poorly water-soluble drugs. This System is now patented in the U.S., Australia, New Zealand New Zealand (zē`lənd), island country (2005 est. pop. 4,035,000), 104,454 sq mi (270,534 sq km), in the S Pacific Ocean, over 1,000 mi (1,600 km) SE of Australia.
