LYON OPERA BALLET: NEXT WAVE FESTIVAL.

LYON OPERA BALLET: NEXT WAVE FESTIVAL HARVEY LICHTENSTEIN Harvey Lichtenstein (born 1929) is a retired American dancer and arts administrator, best known for his 32-year tenure (1967-99) as executive director of the Brooklyn Academy of Music.  THEATER, BROOKLYN ACADEMY OF MUSIC Brooklyn Academy of Music, performing arts center located in the borough of Brooklyn, N.Y. and popularly known as BAM.  Swedish choreographer Mats Ek, the male-female relationship is a fierce and icy challenge. His Solo for Two was structured around buckshot buck·shot

The essence of the duet seemed to be contained in a ritual during which they peeled off their clothing, then donned each other's. Later they re-entered in new attire, again bespeaking their original genders.

The choreography had a free-associative, non-sequitur structure, and was danced by Marketa Pizakova and Yuval Pick in the brilliant, toughly erotic style characteristic not only of Lyon Opera Ballet but also of several other European companies. What Ek did not provide was the faintest trace of tenderness.

Nor was there any in Ek's version of Carmen Carmen

In addition to the cigars, the all-too-obvious symbolism included the drawing of lengths of fabric from inside the men's clothing and corps dancers repeatedly presenting their backsides to the audience.

In literature and opera, the role of Carmen is eternally magnetic. Yes, she is sexually rapacious, but she has the dignity of a gypsy and the courage of a tragic heroine. Ek concentrated on her vulgarity. Given a fuller palette to work with, Maite Cebrian Abad's Carmen would surely have extended beyond pure spunk.

As Jose and Escamillo, Pierre Advokatoff and Thierry Vezies were both macho stereotypes, but Advokatoff's sharply etched features and vulpine awareness carded Jose to a deeper dimension.

costumes, especially for the female corps, were reflective of her taste or Ek's. Either way, they had a provincial "opry house" look.

Ek's choreographic style often seems to be dependent upon competition. As the dancers pile trick upon trick, attack upon attack, they appear to be trying to outdo each other. Little virtue is placed on subtlety. Even Dominique Laine as the usually gentle Micaela, was as rough as the rest.
