From the LWV of the Houston Area, TX: "I was delighted to read that the LWVUS was named to receive the 2005 Freedom Award from NASS. You might be interested to know that Houston's own Harris County Clerk Beverly Kaufman was instrumental in nominating the League for the award. Harris County is the 3rd most populous county in the United States, so administering its elections requires quite an organization. County Clerk Kaufman ... with County Tax Assessor-Collector Paul Bettencourt ... run an extremely efficient and accessible operation. The Houston Area League lends volunteer assistance in registering voters, educating them about procedures, and supplying and training poll workers. Ms. Kaufman says that her excellent experience with the Houston Area League made her aware of how League members all over the country are doing similar work in serving their communities. Consequently, the Houston Area League feels particularly connected to the 2005 Freedom Award that recognizes all LWV members ... Both Ms. Kaufman and Mr. Bettencourt are [active] duespaying members of the Houston Area League. Ms. Kaufman has been an active co-host of our annual fundraiser for four years."
