In 2002, seven Sikhs sued the temple, complaining that the then-Supreme Council illegally held power and had no intention of ever stepping down. A County Superior Court judge ruled that the temple's own bylaws The rules and regulations enacted by an association or a corporation to provide a framework for its operation and management. Since the previous 1996 election had resulted in violence, the judge outlined a procedure for running the elections. The League was asked to monitor the elections and count the votes. Members from seven other Bay Area Leagues also participated. The League's presence during the 12 hours the polls were open assured voters that everyone's vote would count. It was a plus for women voters to see women in charge of the process and some League members spoke Urdu or Hindi, easing communication problems. League members counted the votes and submitted the results to the court the next afternoon. All but five of the 4,500 ballots cast were reconciled. The Sikh community was grateful to the League, and the judge was pleased. The League, in turn, found a new avenue to foster community dialogue within its diverse population.
