LUCKY 13 FOR ECR CONQUISTADORES TOP SAN PEDRO FOR CITY SOFTBALL TITLE.

In 1999, Brittany Goodchild watched her older sister Jacqui and the El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

Back in those days, the Conquistadores seemed to end almost every season with a City championship, winning 12 titles between 1983 and 1999.

Goodchild never dreamed it would take so long to win another.

But after watching San Pedro win five consecutive City titles, El Camino Real is back on top.

Senior Daryn Rose drove in Goodchild with the winning run in the top of the eighth inning in·ning

It was the 13th City title for El Camino Real (28-6), breaking the tie for all-time titles with San Pedro.

``It hasn't hit me yet,'' Rose said. ``We knew we were a better team (after losing five straight years in the semifinals). Finally, this year our heart was in it.''

It was the second City title in less than a week for El Camino Real. On Saturday, the baseball team defeated Chatsworth 5-1 at Dodger Stadium     [ .

It was the sixth time a school has won baseball and softball titles in the same year. El Camino Real is the only school to do it more than once, winning both titles in 2005, 1997 and 1994.

``It's sweeter that we did it together,'' El Camino Real junior pitcher Megan Miller said. ``Last year we lost together. Now we can have a party together.''

Miller (22-3) was nearly as dominant as baseball pitcher Eric Pettis was on Saturday. She gave up only two hits, both infield singles, and struck out five. Only two runners advanced past first base, and the Conquistadores were never seriously challenged.

San Pedro freshman pitcher Taylor Petty (19-3) also was impressive, striking out nine of the first 17 batters she faced.

The only thing that slowed either pitcher down were two lengthy delays when the outfield sprinklers came on during play.

After the fifth inning, El Camino Real began to adjust to Petty's riseball and changeup change·up

The Conquistadores loaded the bases in the sixth and nearly scored a run on Amanda MacIntosh's infield single up the middle. Petty slowed the ball by kicking it with her left foot to prevent it from going into center field.

In the eighth inning, Goodchild drove a single to shallow left, setting the stage for Rose's heroics.

After a lengthy at-bat, Rose drove an outside pitch to right to score Goodchild for the Conquistadores' first run. Sarah Bass then brought home Rose with a sacrifice fly to left. Rose slid headfirst head·first   also head·fore·most

into home, ahead of the throw, and was mobbed by her teammates.

``We worked on hitting the outside pitch all week,'' El Camino Real coach Lori Chandler said. ``I knew it would come down to who got the clutch hit because it was a pitchers' duel duel, prearranged armed fight with deadly weapons, usually swords or pistols, between two persons concerned with a point of honor. The duel may have originated in the wager of battle, an early mode of trial in which an accused person fought with his accuser under  and I could not be happier it was Daryn Rose.''

Goodchild went 2 for 4, reaching base in three of her four plate appearances.

San Pedro ended the season 29-3.
