LUCE IMPROVES PITCHING RECORD TO LEAGUE-BEST 4-0 : JETHAWKS 7, R. CUCAMONGA 6.

Byline: Dave Desmond Daily News Staff Writer

Rob Luce was plugged into the JetHawks' starting rotation only after two other pitchers were placed on the disabled list at the start of the season. Those pitchers are now healthy, but Luce doesn't appear to be leaving the rotation anytime soon.

His 7-6 victory over the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes are a minor league baseball team in Rancho Cucamonga, California, USA. They are a "high-A" class team in the California League, and have been a farm team of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim since 2001.  Friday night before 3,659 at Lancaster Municipal Stadium improved his record to a California League-best 4-0.

The 22-year-old right-hander struck out five and yielded five hits and two earned runs before leaving with a 7-3 lead after six innings. Luce, who has a 2.48 ERA, is the only Lancaster pitcher with more than one victory.

Reliever Sean Spencer threw the final three innings to earn his first save for the JetHawks (10-12), who snapped the Quakes' (9-13) winning streak Noun 1. winning streak - a streak of wins

JETHAWKS UPDATE

Lost in Thursday's disappointing 11-0 loss to Rancho Cucamonga was an encouraging outing by right-hander Aaron Scheffer.

Scheffer, recently bumped from the JetHawks' starting rotation when Jeff Farnsworth was activated from the disabled list, struck out seven and allowed three runs in 5-2/3 innings of relief.

``We've been very encouraged,'' pitching coach Jim Slaton said. ``His last two outings out of the pen have been very good.''

Matchup: Lancaster right-hander Jeff Farnsworth (0-0, 1.50) will face San Jose right-hander Brandon Leese (1-1, 4.12) in the opener of a three-game series at Lancaster Municipal Stadium. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
