LUCAS SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETES ESA DEVELOPMENT CONTRACT

PARIS, June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Lucas has successfully completed a European Space Agency (ESA) development contract aimed at understanding and testing possible solutions to the constraints in the use of mechanical cryocoolers on board spacecraft. The contract has provided data to further the characterization of these systems, particularly in one of the key areas of concern -- exported vibration levels.
Lucas and its partner, Lockheed Missiles and Space Co., Palo Alto, Calif., have developed, on a separate internally funded program, a patented Digital Error Correction System (DECS) that electronically controls back-to-back cryocoolers to cancel out the resultant forces that cause the vibration.
With the support of ESA, Lucas has been able to demonstrate that the induced forces generated from this system are of the same magnitude as are required by planned future European space experiments.
Mechanical cryocoolers are a rapidly maturing technology, which offer significant weight reduction and longer life when compared to existing systems. Lucas and its partner, Lockheed, are at the forefront of the development of this technology.
Lucas and Lockheed offer a number of cryogenic systems that cool to cryogenic temperatures in the range of 55K to 80K (-218 degrees C to -193 degrees C) significantly improving the efficiency of the semi- conducting arrays used to detect infrared and submillimeter wavelength radiation.
Together Lucas and Lockheed have achieved a number of contract successes including awards from NASA, Loral and the U.S. Air Force and will "fly" a system in 1994.
Lucas Engine Systems of Birmingham, England, is an international business which is part of Lucas' aerospace business portfolio. In addition to its cryogenics systems capabilities, the business designs, develops and manufactures fuel systems and equipment for the world's civil and military aeroengine industry.
Lucas aerospace businesses are leading suppliers of aerospace systems and equipment with annual sales of $1.2 billion and operating facilities across North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific, as well as associated companies, joint ventures, marketing and customer support facilities around the world. The businesses are part of Lucas Industries plc, a leading international supplier of advanced technology systems, components and services to the world's aerospace, automotive and other selected markets, with sales of $4.5 billion.
