Trustees will decide at a board meeting Feb. 20 whether to appoint a replacement or call a special election to fill the remaining 34 months in Lucas' term, said board president Maurice Kunkel.

``My suspicion is because it's so much cheaper to appoint a replacement, we'll appoint,'' Kunkel said.

Lucas, a teacher at Almondale Middle School in neighboring Keppel Union School District, announced his plans to retire at the Jan. 16 board meeting. He was elected in November 2001 to a four-year term.

Kunkel said the cost of a special election could be $7,000 to $18,000. If the board chooses to appoint a replacement, the appointment will take place on March 13.

If the board appoints a replacement, Kunkel said, the appointee APPOINTEE. Three seats will be up for election on the November ballot, he said. Kunkel said he does not think Lucas' departure will create problems on the board.

``We've been through this in the past,'' he said. ``When someone else retired, we appointed someone ... I know we have people interested in running for the board.''

``They are broad and everybody uses them,'' Lucas said at the time. ``The nice thing is they have examples in there. You don't say 'Jesus,' you say 'Creator.' It's something that's neutral and not offensive. I'm glad this is behind us.''
