LUCAS HOIST HELPS SAVE 77 PEOPLE TRAPPED IN SMOKEY MOUNTAINS

PARIS, June 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Lucas hoists proved to be key to the live-saving rescue of 77 people who were trapped at Smokey Mountain National Park on the Tennessee-North Carolina border when a massive snow storm swept through the region in mid-March. A total of 117 people were trapped in the mountains, most of whom were hiking and did not reach shelter when the storm hit and brought with it below-freezing temperatures. Of the 117 people, 77 were evacuated utilizing the hoist, while the remaining 40 were rescued utilizing other means.
The 50th Medical Company, 101st Airborne, Ft. Campbell, Ky., was called in for emergency rescue and employed six UH-60 Blackhawks, four of which were equipped with Lucas rescue hoists. The hoists were utilized to extract the people from the mountains at an average altitude of 4,700 to 6,000 feet. A medic rode down the hoist and carried back one individual at a time, which placed the weight of two people on the hoist during each extraction. The rescue took place over a two-day period and some were at night in which case night vision goggles were utilized. Without the use of the hoist to airlift the people out of the mountain, chances of survival under such extreme conditions were slim.
Maj. Garry Atkins, commanding officer of the 50th Medical Company, indicated that the hoists ran without failure, even under constant stress. The hoists performed many consecutive lifts from altitudes up to 250 feet above ground level and proved to be extremely reliable throughout the hoisting operations.
The people at the City of Industry, Calif., Lucas facility that produce the hoist were proud to hear that their product contributed to the life-saving rescue of so many people and stood the test of endurance without fail. Lucas manufactures hoists that are proven in military, government and commercial service around the world. The company is currently the sole supplier of internally mounted rescue hoists to the U.S. Army.
