LUCAS BEGINS PRODUCTION ON 2.5 MILLION POUNDS INVESTMENT IN ADVANCED TRANSPARENCY COATING TECHNOLOGY

PARIS, June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- A 2.5 million pounds investment and eight years of research and development activity have finally culminated into production start up of Lucas' advanced thin film optical coating facility in Luton, England. The facility was built to capitalize on Lucas' advances in the application of Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) thin film coating on cockpit transparencies. With the use of ITO thin film coating technology, Lucas has the ability to incorporate de-icing and de-misting capabilities directly within the laminated acrylic transparencies with the advantages of greater light transmission over systems utilizing gold film and wire heated elements. The benefits to the customer are improved product reliability, high optical quality, improved light transmission and electromagnetic compatibility/radio frequency interference screening. Civil aerospace markets can benefit from lower cost of ownership, military markets from stealth and night vision goggle compatibility.
The facility, which gives Lucas the ability to process an aircraft canopy of up to 3 meters in length with complex geometry, consists of a 20-ton, 13-feet-diameter by 16.4-feet-long vacuum chamber with a six- axis robotic arm to apply the metallic layers onto the transparency. The processes are carefully controlled using a computer-aided design (CAD) system to cope with any geometry required by the customer.
The facility is contained within Lucas' Engineering & Heating Systems business which is part of the international group of businesses that comprise Lucas' Aircraft Systems. Aircraft Systems, in addition to its transparency capabilities, designs, develops and manufactures equipment and systems for electric power generation, ice protection, missile casings and actuation, electroluminescent lighting, cockpit and cabin window and cargo handling systems.
Lucas aerospace businesses are leading suppliers of aerospace systems and equipment with annual sales of $1.2 billion and operating facilities across North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific, as well as associated companies, joint ventures, marketing and customer support facilities around the world. The businesses are part of Lucas Industries plc, a leading international supplier of advanced technology systems, components and services to the world's aerospace, automotive and other selected markets, with sales of $4.5 billion.
