LTV ENDORSES OHIO GOVERNOR'S PLEDGE TO ASSIST IN POLLUTION PREVENTION

CLEVELAND, Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- LTV Corporation (NYSE: LTV) today endorsed Ohio Governor George V. Voinovich's pledge that the Ohio EPA will work with Ohio businesses to develop voluntary, cooperative plans to reduce pollution.
LTV Steel president and chief operating officer, J. Peter Kelly, said, "Our commitment to continuous improvement pertains to our environmental performance as well as to product quality, customer satisfaction, employee safety, cost reduction and productivity," he said.
Kelly said that LTV Steel's Cleveland Works significantly improved its environmental performance during 1992. According to Toxic Chemical Release Inventory (TRI) reports filed in July with the United States Environmental Protection Agency, LTV's Cleveland Works reduced toxic releases 12.5 percent in 1992 to 2.8 million pounds form 3.2 million pounds in 1991. The 1992 improvements bring the total reduction of toxic releases to over 53 percent since 1989. LTV reduced its 1992 Cleveland water releases by 56 percent, and air releases by 25 percent from 1991 levels.
The reduction in toxic releases reflects the success LTV Steel has achieved under the voluntary "33/50" program, which targets 17 toxic chemicals. The program was established in 1990 by the EPA. At the end of 1992, LTV Steel had reduced toxic releases by over 80 percent from 1988 levels, compared with the EPA's goal of reducing toxic releases 50 percent by 1995. LTV Steel was one of the first steel producers to join that voluntary program.
