:LSI) today announced that LSI Logic has become the first system-on-a-chip (SoC) provider to license the new MIPS32(TM) 24K(TM) family, the industry's highest performance line of licensable synthesizable cores. The new MIPS-Based(TM) cores extend LSI Logic's strengths in the office automation (laser and high-end ink jet printers and copiers), networking, storage, and consumer (DVD DVD: see digital versatile disc.

To date LSI Logic has licensed a number of products from MIPS Technologies including the MIPS32 and MIPS64(R) instruction set architectures and processor cores from the 4KE(TM) and 5K(TM) core families. This latest agreement builds upon this strong relationship and will provide LSI Logic's ASIC customers with the highest performance synthesizable processor core for their next generation applications. LSI Logic is one of the highest volume suppliers of MIPS-Based SoCs, shipping products to leading customers in applications such as consumer video games, printing, networking and storage.

"The MIPS architecture is well recognized by OEMs in high growth markets such as high-end ink jet and laser printers, color copiers and other consumer products as the processor architecture of choice," said Rafi Kedem, senior director of CoreWare Technology Group at LSI Logic. "LSI Logic will continue to be a driver in these markets and others by working with industry-leaders such as MIPS Technologies to provide the highest-performance and cost-effective embedded processor cores."

"As one of our premier licensees, LSI Logic is ensuring that its ASIC and ASSP (Application Specific Standard Part) An ASIC chip that is designed as a generic device for a particular market. Whereas an ASIC is typically used only by its creator, ASSPs are used by many different companies in the design of their products. See ASIC.  portfolios have the highest performance synthesizable processors with the addition of the 24K core family," said Jack Browne, vice president of worldwide sales for MIPS Technologies. "We are very excited that LSI Logic is the first SoC provider to adopt our latest product line."

About the High Performance 24K Core Family

With operating performance ranging from 400 to 550 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  (worst case) in a 0.13-micron process, the 24K core family's features include hardware floating point support for the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, New York, www.ieee.org) A membership organization that includes engineers, scientists and students in electronics and allied fields.  754 standard, a 32x32 integer multiplier and configurable MMU (Memory Management Unit) The part of the computer that governs memory access. Either part of the CPU chip or housed on separate chips, the MMU controls memory partitions and virtual memory. See memory and virtual memory.

The 24K Pro(TM) core includes MIPS Technologies' CorExtend(TM) capability that enables designers to add their application-specific instructions while maintaining full compliance with the MIPS32 architecture. 24K core customers also have access to the latest version of MIPS Technologies' SOC-it(TM) system controller that is optimized for the industry-standard OCP (processor) OCP - Order Code Processor.  on-chip interconnect. The SOC-it system architecture also provides an integrated high performance memory controller (SDR See software defined radio.  and DDR (Double Data Rate) Refers to an SDRAM memory chip that increases performance by doubling the effective data rate of the frontside bus. The 24K core family is attracting support from a wide range of leading third party companies such as Green Hills Software, Mentor Graphics, Microsoft, Monta Vista and Wind River Systems. The product family is targeted at achieving superior performance and power efficiency while utilizing industry-standard processes and libraries. MIPS Technologies is strategically partnered with Cadence and Synopsys to deliver proven design flows and with Virage Logic to incorporate embedded memory technology.

Availability

MIPS32 24K cores are available to lead customers now and will be generally available for licensing in early 2004.
