LPGA MAKES WILSHIRE DEBUT.

Byline: GREG WILCOX Golf

It won't be a surprise if Laura Davies Laura Jane Davies CBE (born October 5, 1963 in Coventry, England) is an English professional golfer.

She is considered the most accomplished English female golfer of modern times[1] [2]

For this we can credit the shell game that each year seems to be the LPGA schedule, where tournaments are here one year and gone the next.

The official program for The Office Depot hosted by Amy Alcott, which starts today at venerable Wilshire Country Club, will list Park as the defending champion.

But she isn't all that familiar with the course or the tournament's name.

Davies, the long-hitting Brit, is the defending champion of the tour's last stop here, the 2000 Los Angeles Women's Championship at Simi Valley's Wood Ranch Country Club.

That event went poof, but at least Davies got the trophy and her winner's check cleared the bank.

But now she doesn't have a tournament to defend.

Both golfers are taking the situation in stride.

Last June, Park, a native of South Korea who lives in Phoenix, won the Kathy Ireland Greens.com Classic at Wachesaw Plantation's East Golf Course in Murrells Inlet, S.C.

That tournament was rescheduled to an earlier position in the year - next weekend - and given a new name. Office Depot emerged as the sponsor a couple of weeks ago.

This being L.A., an image transplant is no big deal, especially to Park, even though she is defending a new title on an unfamiliar course.

``Well, in the tournament I won last year I was a rookie, so it was the first time playing that course. It was that way for me in every event I played, so I know I can make the adjustment,'' she said this week during a conference call with reporters. ``I like the L.A. area, I am very familiar with the area and I am closer to home, too.''

For Davies, it's a case of ``been there and I can't do that anymore.''

Her trophy case includes hardware from several tournaments that no longer exist, so she won't dwell on what once was.

``It has happened to me so many times I have stopped counting,'' she said. ``The list is rather long. I would say a minimum of eight. (They) just vanished in the night. I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

"Don't know the trade." A Street expression used whenever one party lacks knowledge of a trade or receives conflicting instructions from the other party.
if it's me or what it is.''

One thing both have in common is a desire to play Wilshire, the former home of the Senior PGA tour stop in Los Angeles.

Davies is especially keen to give the layout a go.

``I have heard that it is a great course and it is the main reason I am coming out to play in Los Angeles. I was going to take three weeks off, but when I heard about the course, which I understand is like the traditional courses, I decided to play. I have been one to moan about some of the places we play, so when I hear about a great one, I guess I better show up,'' she said.

So how about making the Wilshire stop the tournament with two defending champions?

Notes:

--In a somewhat unusual twist The Office Depot tournament's final round will be Saturday.

--Talk about your crowded trophy case.

Not only does Tiger Woods hold all four major titles at the same time, he also is the current defending champion of just about every other significant title on tour.

Two weeks before the Masters he won The Players Championship, which in some quarters means he really won five majors in a row.

He is also defending champion at The Memorial, Jack Nicklaus' tournament which is also majorly ma·jor·ly

NEC was founded in Tokyo in 1899 as Nippon Electric Company, Ltd.
Inventional, a World Golf Championship event; and the Canadian Open.

No one has ever held all these titles at the same time.

Also noteworthy is that in his six major wins, Woods shot 94 under par. Nicklaus' scores in his first six majors put him at 39 under.
