LOYOLA'S LONG, HARD DRIVE TO TITLE COMPLETE FIRST SERRA LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP CLINCHED LOYOLA 28, BISHOP AMAT 5.

Byline: Ross Siler Staff Writer

But it only took the Cubs a little more than 90 seconds at the start of the second half to put away the Lancers lanc·er

Junior Matt Appenfelder caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from Scott Deke deke

, then returned an interception 30 yards along the left sideline for another score just 1 minute, 34 seconds later as Loyola rolled to a 28-5 victory.

``The whole first half, I didn't touch the ball. I didn't even come close to making a play,'' Appenfelder said. ``I was just hoping in the second half something would come my way so I could take advantage of it.''

Coupled with Mater Dei's victory over Santa Margarita Santa Margarita ("Saint Margaret") may refer to:

, Loyola clinched a share of its first Serra League title. Loyola will enter the Southern Section Div. I playoffs as the league's No. 1 seed by virtue of its victory this year over Mater Dei Mater Dei is Latin for "Mother of God", referring to the Virgin Mary. The term has been used to name various institutions, often Catholic, including:
  • Mater Dei Catholic College, Wagga Wagga
  • Mater Dei College, Western Australia
.

To the Cubs' players, though, winning the Serra League itself made for a perfect end to the regular season. Loyola (7-3, 4-1) started the year 3-3 and coach Steve Grady said after Friday's game that many had written off his team at that point.

But the celebration on Bishop Amat's field proved otherwise. Deke completed 9 of 15 passes for 125 yards and two touchdowns and George Hypolite rushed for 82 yards in 10 carries to lead the Cubs to their fourth consecutive victory.

``A lot of people think the Serra League is one of the toughest leagues in the country,'' Deke said. ``We worked so hard in the offseason, through the season, just to get the chance to do this. It's an honor and a privilege.''

By and large, the difference in the game was Loyola's defense. Ian Wilson Ian Wilson may be:

on the night's third play and the Cubs allowed just two first downs and 55 total yards in leading 14-3 at halftime.

With Loyola stuck in traffic, the game's start was delayed 20 minutes to accommodate warm-ups. Once they hit the field, though, the Cubs needed less than five minutes to come up with the big play early.

James Abbott intercepted a pass out of the arms of a Bishop Amat receiver, and Loyola covered 45 yards in 12 plays to go ahead 7-0 on a 1-yard run by Trason Bragg, held to only 38 yards in 13 carries.

Bishop Amat (6-4, 2-3) was unable to catch a break all game. The Lancers narrowly missed completing a wide-receiver pass on their opening play, converted two Loyola turnovers into just three points and failed to recover a Hypolite fumble to start the second half.
