LOWER GAS COSTS MEAN REDUCED RATES FOR COLUMBIA GAS CUSTOMERS
COLUMBUS, Ohio, Feb. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Columbia Gas of Kentucky's residential customers will see their monthly bills decrease by an average of more than four percent effective March 1. When the new rate goes into effect, Columbia Gas customers' bills will be almost 12 percent lower than in March 1983, when natural gas prices were at their peak.
The savings are a result of the gas cost adjustment filing Jan. 31 with the Kentucky Public Service Commission. Under current commission rules, Columbia adjusts bills twice a year to reflect the actual cost of gas purchased from suppliers.
If approved, the residential customer who uses an average of 9 Mcf (9,000 cubic feet) of gas a month will see the current average monthly bill reduced by $2.21, from $53.14 to $50.93.
"With these additional savings, clean-burning natural gas continues to widen the gap as America's most attractive energy value," said Richard J. Gordon, president of Columbia Gas of Kentucky.
"We are pleased with our ability to purchase gas at such low prices and pass the savings along to our customers," he said. "This is an example of our continuing efforts to provide customers with the best possible natural gas service at the lowest possible cost.
"This also is a clear indication of the significant changes that are taking place in the natural gas industry. These lower costs are a direct result of lower prices at the wellhead. Natural gas prices are at record lows due to lower demand caused by continued warmer-than-normal temperatures across the midwest.
"While we've seen several mild winters in a row, customers must realize that a return to more normal winter weather could result in increases in the price we pay for gas in the future."
Columbia Gas of Kentucky serves 124,000 customers in 21 counties and 28 communities.
