LOW-COST ENCRYPTION SYSTEM INTRODUCED TODAY BY MACROVISION

VES-TD Provides Security for Point-to-Point Video Transmissions
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Nov. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Macrovision Corp. today introduced its new Video Encryption System (VES-TD Direct). VES-TD provides ultra-high security for point-to-point video transmissions at a cost far below other encryption products available today.
    VES-TD is targeted at:
-- corporations which frequently need to transmit video or hold video conferences between two locations,
-- government/military/law enforcement agencies which often require ultra-high security for point-to-point video transmissions,
-- news gathering organizations which need to transmit breaking news stories -- often from remote sites -- to regional bureaus or network studios. Low-cost Security
"We're providing users with some distinct advantages never before available to them," said Joseph F. Swyt, president of Macrovision. "For the first time, low-cost security is available in point-to-point transmission applications."
The VES-TD is available in dedicated encoder/decoder pairs and features multiple security levels, including advanced encryption techniques which completely conceal the transmitted video and audio signals -- without affecting the original quality.
Each decoder can only be addressed and accessed by its dedicated encoder to provide maximum signal security. The units accept and pass standard, full-motion NTSC or PAL signals (separate baseband video and audio), with the scrambled signals able to traverse satellite, terrestrial, microwave, cable and fiber optic links. Simple Operation
Operation of the VES-TD encryption system is simple, featuring hands-off decoder operation, and no fine tuning or adjustments. A non-technical person can be trained to use the system in less than five minutes.
Approximately the size of a standard VCR, the 8-bit VES-TD encoders and decoders can be rack mounted, using an option 19" tray. The units are easily portable, weighing just 16 pounds each. The VES Product Family
In addition to VES-TD, the Macrovision VES product family also includes:
    --VES-TP
This 9-bit video encryption system for professional broadcast transmissions provide the highest video, audio signal quality and security available. Appropriate for multi-point applications.
    --VCES
The Video Cassette Encryption System (VCES) is ideal for corporations which need to protect their video recordings from unauthorized viewers. The system encrypts video information on standard videocassettes, which can then be viewed only by personnel with the correct decoder and password. An additional security feature restricts viewing to a certain date window.
"In talking with our customers, we discovered a great need for reasonably priced point-to-point video encryption," added Swyt. "While our VES-TP professional system is ideal for corporations with multi-point requirements, VES-TD is the answer for secure transmissions between just two locations." Price/Availability
A VES-TD dedicated encoder/decoder system is priced at $8,995, and is available 60 days ARO. About Macrovision
