LOVE YOUR PET? PROTECT IT WITH RED CROSS TRAINING.

``First Aid for Dogs and Cats'' will be offered from 6 to 10 p.m. Wednesday at the local Red Cross office, 23152 1/2 W. Valencia Blvd., Valencia.

Developed in 1997, the course has become so popular that 300 Red Cross chapters across the nation now offer it on a regular basis. Much of what is learned can be applied to all mammals, but the class focuses on dogs and cats.

``The people who take this course are there because they just genuinely love their pets,'' James said. ``We talk about pets and share stories during the class, so it's actually a pretty fun course to take.''

Participants learn the first-aid techniques on mannequins, so no pets are allowed in the class. The course will teach pet owners how to perform rescue breathing, how to stop bleeding and splint splint, rigid or semiflexible device for the immobilization of displaced or fractured parts of the body. Most commonly employed for fractures of bones, a splint may be a first-aid measure that allows the patient to be moved without displacing the injured part, or it  broken bones This article or section has multiple issues:

 James, choking is the most common pet emergency because dogs and cats pick up everything with their mouths, and those who take the course will learn what to do in a choking emergency, including how to do the Heimlich maneuver Heimlich maneuver, emergency procedure used to treat choking victims whose airway is obstructed by food or another substance. It forces air from the lungs through the windpipe, pushing the obstruction out.  for pets.

Pet owners of all ages can take the course at a cost of $31 per person. Pet first aid kits will be available for purchase ranging in price from $15 to $35. To register for the class, call the American Red Cross at (800) 627-7000.

For those who are unable to attend the class Wednesday, the Red Cross offers a book for $10 and a video for $19.95 that also explain pet first-aid techniques. Call the local Red Cross chapter at (661) 259-1805 for information.
