LOVE RIDE SIGN-UPS SET FOR TODAY IN GLENDALE.Byline: Daily News A kickoff party will be held today to begin registration for the annual Love Ride, billed as the largest motorcycle fund-raiser in the world. The ride, which starts every year at the Harley-Davidson dealership in Glendale, typically draws about 20,000 participants. On Nov. 14, Love Ride 16 will take motorcyclists on a 50-mile trek from Glendale to Castaic Lake, where there will be a concert, trade show and a Tony Roma's barbecue. Lorenzo Lamas is grand marshal. The event benefits the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the ``Reading by 9'' program. The kickoff party today will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Glendale Harley-Davidson, 3717 San Fernando Road. A concert and barbecue are planned. Oliver Shokouh, who owns the Harley-Davidson shop in Glendale, started the event in 1984 to promote a positive image for motorcyclists. Since the ride's original 500 riders and $40,000 donation, Love Ride has raised more than $10 million for the MDA. Initial Love Rides journeyed to a park in the Malibu hills, but the event became so popular that organizers switched to Castaic Lake State Recreation Area. Riders each donate at least $50 in order to participate. For more information, call the hotline for the Love Ride at (818) 246-5618, Ext. 7 or visit the Web site www.loveride.org. |
