LOUIS F. BANTLE APPOINTED CHAIRMAN EMERITUS BY UST BOARD OF DIRECTORS

 GREENWICH, Conn., Nov. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- UST's Board of Directors announced today that Louis F. Bantle has been appointed chairman emeritus of the Board of Directors, effective December 1. On that date, he will retire as chairman of the Board and chief executive officer of the Company.
 In his 20 years as chairman and chief executive officer, UST Inc. (NYSE: UST) achieved unprecedented growth. The Company's market value increased from $111 million in 1973 to over $6 billion by the end of 1992. In two decades, Mr. Bantle led the company from $100 million to over $1 billion in sales in 1992. In 1985, the Company was added to the Fortune 500 and is currently listed at 355.
 Mr. Bantle joined United States Tobacco Company in 1962 and in 1965, was elected a vice president. Two years later, he was elected to the Company's Board of Directors. In 1973, he was elected chairman of the Board and has served in the capacity of chief executive officer since that time.
 In his over 31 years of service to the Company, Mr. Bantle has been lauded for his active involvement with numerous community, charitable, educational and business causes.
 Among his many honors, Mr. Bantle is chairman emeritus for life of the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council in Fairfield County and a Board member of High Watch and Ashley, Inc. He is a recipient of the National Conference of Christians and Jews' National Human Relations Award. Mr. Bantle is also a trustee of Syracuse University and serves as a board member of the Taft Institute, The National Legal Center for the Public Interest and the Greater New York Boy Scout Council.
 A former marine captain, Mr. Bantle received the prestigious "Semper Fi" award from the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation. He is also a Knight of the Royal Order of the North Star, an exclusive investiture of the government of Sweden rarely granted outside that country.
 Mr. Bantle was graduated from Syracuse University in 1951 and served two years active duty in the U.S. Marine Corps. He is married to the former Virginia Clark and has two children, Robert and Terri.
 Through its subsidiaries, UST Inc. is a leading producer and marketer of moist smokeless tobacco products including Copenhagen, Skoal, Skoal Long Cut and Skoal Bandits.
