Six current UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University) UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX players have qualified - John Merrick, Steve Conway, Breene Murphy, John Poucher, Travis Johnson and Simi Valley's Roy Moon. USC will have five players from its 2003 roster - Nico Bollini, Chris Botsford, Tyler Ley, Scott Oxandaboure and former Prep League standout Brad Shaw of Brentwood. Coach O.D. Vincent's Bruins and the Kurt Schuette-coached Trojans, who both advanced to the NCAA NCAA abbr. National Collegiate Athletic Association championship tournament last month, will be fielding former SCGA champions. Merrick won two years ago at La Jolla Country Club, just a few miles south of Torrey Pines, and Bollini won last year at El Caballero cab·al·le·ro n. pl. cab·al·le·ros 1. Recent Northridge graduate Scott Bashin, former College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. While Steinberg tops the list of local winners in the SCGA Championship - the former North Hollywood High player won at Annandale in 1988, Bel-Air in '91, Fairbanks Ranch in '92 and Lakeside in '97 - the area has produced two other relatively recent winners in this century-old event. Former Westlake High and California player Charlie Wi was an SCGA champion in '95 at Santa Ana Country Club and also won the State Amateur that year in a rare double. Dave Sheff, now a member of Oakmont Country Club Oakmont Country Club is a prestigious "top five" country club and the "oldest top-ranked golf course in the U.S.".[1] It is located in the Pittsburgh suburbs of Plum and Oakmont, Pennsylvania, USA. of Glendale, won the '86 SCGA title at Hillcrest. Steinberg, who could tie record-holder Paul Hunter with a fifth victory in the SCGA Amateur, already has six SCGA titles, having won the SCGA Mid-Amateur in '96 at Victoria Club and two years ago at Lakeside. More argument for Woodland Hills team-play strength: Hogarth and Baker finished 2-3 behind Steinberg in that 2001 SCGA Mid-Am at Lakeside, and Hogarth won the SCGA Mid-Am in '99 at Victoria Club and also the U.S. Public Links championship in 1991 in Hawaii. --State Amateur: Moon, the UCLA junior standout and former Marmonte League champion for Royal High of Simi Valley, highlighted area efforts in last week's State Amateur at Pebble Beach, but Scott Anderson of Palmdale matched Moon for the deepest advancement by an area player. Both got to the second stage of match play, where No. 23 seed Anderson lost 7 and 6 to No. 10 seed Mark Warman of San Clemente. Moon - top-seeded by virtue of his medalist score of 71-70-141 in stroke play - lost 1-up to Buzz Peel of Delray Beach. The scheduled 36-hole final came down to a battle of teenagers, with 18-year-old Patrick Nagle of Pacifica posting a 4 and 3 victory over 19- year-old Spencer Levin, who played for UCLA this past season. Nagle, who closed out the championship match with a second-shot eagle that spun back into the cup on the par-4 15th hole, reached the final by defeating defending-champion Eddie Heinen of Las Vegas 1-up.
