Byline: Carol Rock Staff Writer

CASTAIC - Castaic Lake Castaic Lake is a lake on Castaic Creek formed by Castaic Dam, in northwestern Los Angeles County, California, near the town of Castaic. The 323,700 acre foot lake (399,000,000 m³) is the terminus of the West Branch of the California Aqueduct, though some comes from the 154 mi²  supporters were feeling the love Sunday when tens of thousands of motorcyclists roared into the recreation area that has been threatened with closure this year.

More than 20,000 motorcycle riders joined the 20th annual Love Ride, which benefited various charities including literacy programs and medical foundations, such as the City of Hope, the Muscular Dystrophy Association The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) is an organization founded in 1950 which combats muscular dystrophy and diseases of the nervous system and muscular system in general by funding research, providing medical and community services, and educating health professionals  and the National Kidney Foundation Not to be confused with American Kidney Fund.

``We should have 20,000 more supporters,'' said Ray Graeber, treasurer of the Friends of Castaic Lake, a group that provides volunteer and financial support to the recreation complex.

Castaic Town Council member Tere Tucker was taking advantage of the captive audience by asking bikers to contact their state representatives in support of keeping Castaic Lake open.

Vendors selling everything from leather to motorcycles parts, jewelry and bandannas, patches and massages did a brisk business, while thousands waited in line for a barbecue lunch that was included with admission.

The ride, started as a biker's carnival in 1981 by Glendale Harley Davidson owner Oliver Shokouh, began as a way to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association, of which Harley Davidson is a corporate sponsor.

The ride moved around over the years, settling in Castaic in 1993.

``I've ridden bikes since I was a kid,'' he said. ``We used to put chain- saw motors and belt drives on our bikes. Then I started riding dirt bikes.''

McGinnis has moved up in the motorcycle world now, owning a 100th anniversary Special Edition Harley Davidson.

The thousands of motorcycles parked on the turf at Castaic came in a rainbow of brilliant colors and sported custom artwork. The crowd was a mix of bikers in worn black leather and those who favored boutique Harley Davidson outfits.

Even Pomeranians Rocky and Hopper, owned by Diane Read of Castaic, wore Harley sweat shirts to brace against the late morning chill.

Rena Thomsen has been participating in the Love Ride with her husband, Michael, for the past three years.

``He got me started,'' said the Arizona resident, noting that this was the first year in which they hadn't encountered rain somewhere along the route between Phoenix and Castaic.

``It is definitely fun. Riding has allowed us to see a lot of different places and meet some interesting people.''
