In the first project under way from the $139 million bond measure approved by local voters in 2004, construction workers are finishing up a 915-space parking lot to ease the campus's chronic parking congestion The condition of a network when there is not enough bandwidth to support the current traffic load.

``It should be ready for use by students when classes start Aug. 21. They're working really hard on it,'' college spokesman Steve Standerfer said.

The respiratory therapy building will not be ready until the second week of classes, Standerfer said. College officials have not yet decided how they will accomodate the students until then.

The sheriff's academy doesn't begin classes until October, so the construction delay will not cause problems there.

The $139 million bond measure will fund projects aimed at updating the Lancaster campus, which has several buildings more than 40 years old, and start the initial development of a Palmdale campus off Barrel Springs Road in southeast Palmdale.

The overhaul is needed, college officials said, to accommodate enrollment expected nearly to double to more than 23,000 students by 2015.
