Goodnight, sweetheart.

You touched the hearts of so many people in this community during the short time you were with us, Maddie. You were our little fighter - the baby with a new heart, waiting for her mom to get a new heart, too.

We were all rooting for you, honey. We all wanted a happy ending for your story - for you to stay healthy, for a successful heart transplant heart transplant

for your mom, Andrea Baynes, and for a long, beautiful life for both of you.

But the ending has turned out sad - so sad. Your death Saturday, just a week shy of your second birthday, has left a large ache in the heart of this community.

You were doing so great on the first anniversary of your heart transplant. Your mom and dad threw a big party. Everyone was so happy, so grateful. Now, you're gone.

On Monday, your mom called you a gift - a little angel sent down from heaven to help convince people to open their hearts and minds to the value of organ donations - of giving life to others.

``I know it's why she was sent to us,'' said Andrea, who has a defibrillator defibrillator, device that delivers an electrical shock to the heart in order to stop certain forms of rapid heart rhythm disturbances (arrhythmias). The shock changes a fibrillation to an organized rhythm or changes a very rapid and ineffective cardiac rhythm to a  implanted in her chest to keep her heart functioning until a donor is found.

Doctors believe that a virus enlarged Andrea's heart during her pregnancy with Maddie, causing cardiomyopathy Cardiomyopathy Definition

 - heart failure - in both of them.

Your mom was crying when she called you a little angel, Maddie. So was your dad, Ken, and your 5-year-old brother, Brandon. These last two years - watching you get so sick, then better after your transplant - has been an emotional roller coaster that's taken its toll on the whole family.

They still don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

what happened; an autopsy will determine that. But this is what they do know.

Your donor heart had a mild rejection last week, and the doctors put you back on medications you didn't like. They tasted bad and made you feel sick to your stomach.

That's what happened Saturday. Your mom said she was getting you ready to go to UCLA Medical Center UCLA Medical Center is a hospital located on the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles in Los Angeles, California. She was giving you a bath to clean you up when she says you looked up at her, your eyes rolled back, and you fell to one side.

She quickly grabbed you from the tub, cradled you in her arms, and began begging - crying - for you not to go.

Your brother ran next door to get some help, and neighbor David Theroux began giving you CPR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Definition

, where the doctors and nurses, who all knew and loved you, worked feverishly to save your life. But it was too late. The heart given to you from a little girl in Oregon who had died had stopped beating.

Maddie Baynes, the little angel sent from heaven to help people open their hearts and minds to the value of organ donations, went home.

``Our family was blessed to have this beautiful gift,'' her mom says.

We were all blessed. Goodnight, sweetheart.
