LOS ROBLES UNVEILS NEW MEDICAL FACILITY; MEDICAL CENTER'S EAST CAMPUS ALLOWS EXPANSION OF REHABILITATION PROGRAMS.

Byline: Sonia Giordani Daily News Staff Writer

The Los Robles Robles is a common surname in the Spanish language meaning oaks, and may refer to:
  • Alfonso García Robles (1911-1991), Mexican diplomat and politician
  • Aurora Robles (born 1980), Mexican fashion model
  • Charlie Robles (born 1943), Puerto Rican musician

Hospital doctors and staff joined local residents for a tour of the new facility, a 55,000-square-foot building about seven miles from the main hospital that was once occupied by Charter Hospital, a psychiatric psy·chi·at·ric

Hospital spokeswoman Kris Carraway-Bowman said the new facility has allowed the medical center to expand two rehabilitation programs Noun 1. rehabilitation program - a program for restoring someone to good health

``We had always been completely full or very near capacity in that unit,'' Carraway-Bowman said. Since being transferred to the new facility, the program has grown to accommodate 42 patients.

The new east campus opened its doors in mid-December, but administrators are still settling into the resortlike facility equipped with a gymnasium gymnasium

Los Robles purchased the three-story building in May. The transitional care unit, the largest of the three programs at the new facility, will occupy the entire top level, while the ground level will be reserved for occupational, speech and physical therapy.

The middle level will be divided between an 11-bed program for patients requiring acute rehabilitation and a 16-bed wing for patients over 55 undergoing psychiatric treatment.

Recent community needs assessments showed that local residents had been traveling as far as Sherman Oaks and Oxnard for psychiatric help, said Jeff Schwartz, program director.

The east campus facility is part of a new thrust by Los Robles administrators trying to recover from claims by residents that the company has cut patient services and shut out whole communities like the city of Westlake Village since closing the Westlake Medical Center in 1996.

Carraway-Bowman, who is also the mayor of the city of Westlake Village, said the medical center has been exploring new ways to expand patient options. A report making recommendations for how to use the building once occupied by the Westlake Medical Center is expected to be completed by Los Robles in March.

Los Robles ``has directed the consultants to do a medical needs assessment,'' she said. The vacant building may be converted to an assisted living as·sist·ed living
