Four cities, Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow have the right to appoint a Lord Provost instead of a provost (mayor). , John Letford. Mr Reid's first email was prompted by a Royal visit during which Mr Letford allegedly failed to properly address the Queen. The email, titled Dundee and Dignity, said: "Sir, You are an embarrassment to Dundee, when will you resign?"

Mr Reid, 56, said: "I emailed the Lord Provost as a citizen of his city after I was embarrassed at his handling of two recent events." When no reply came, Mr Reid sent a second email, quoting Robert Burns.

He added: "He never responded to any points. But the next thing I know there is a knock and the police are standing there, complete with a riot van.

They told me not to send any more emails, but I said 'don't tell me not to write to an elected official'. When he retires I will stop."

Neither Lord Provost Letford nor Tay side Police was available last night for comment.
