LORAL AWARDED $14.4 MILLION IN CONTRACT MODIFICATIONS FOR FIXED DISTRIBUTED SYSTEM AND SURVEILLANCE DIRECTION SYSTEM.MANASSAS, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 14, 1994--Loral Federal Systems-Manassas, a division of Loral Corporation (NYSE NYSE See: New York Stock Exchange :LOR), has been awarded a total of $14.4 million by the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR SPAWAR Space & Naval Warfare Systems Command (US Navy) SPAWAR Space Warfare ) for contract modifications to the Fixed Distributed System (FDS) and Surveillance Direction System (SDS 1. Under a $7.9 million FDS contract modification, Loral will provide additional capabilities to process sensor array data from the Sound Surveillance System (SOSUS SOSUS Sound Surveillance System ) using the FDS Shore/Signal Information Processing Segment (SSIPS). Loral also will provide hardware upgrades and repackaging of the FDS workstations to conform to existing workstation configurations for other Navy Integrated Undersea Surveillance Systems (IUSS), including SOSUS and Surface Towed Array Sonar A towed array sonar is a sonar array that is towed behind a submarine or surface ship. It is basically a long cable with hydrophones, up to 2000 m, that is trailed behind the ship when deployed. The hydrophones are placed at equal distance on the cable. Under a separate $6.5 million SDS contract modification, Loral will provide the flexibility to accommodate different levels of communications connectivity at various installed IUSS sites. Enhanced levels of operator training, embedded training, government furnished equipment material support and engineering services also are included. The initial contracts awarded in September 1991 to Loral Federal Systems are part of the IUSS, a large-area, ocean basin anti-submarine warfare detection and reporting system. The Fixed Distributed System is a sensor system designed to detect and track quiet nuclear and modern diesel submarines, and the Surveillance Direction System provides the command, control, communications and intelligence functions for the IUSS. Loral will incorporate the enhanced capabilities, services, and hardware upgrades into the existing FDS and SDS contracts immediately, and deliveries are expected to be completed by March 1996.
