LOPORCHIO GOES OUT ON TOP CRESCENTA VALLEY SECURES THIRD-STRAIGHT DIVISION II TITLE FOR COACH.

Byline: Scott Magoloff Staff Writer

LONG BEACH - Once Saturday's Southern Section Division II swimming finals were over at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool, coach Pete Loporchio became officially retired.

The tireless time-studier and preparation guru said it's just a sabbatical sab·bat·i·cal   also sab·bat·ic

and he'll coach again in the future.

Until then, Loporchio's reputation will rest having guided the Crescenta Valley The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. Its name derives from its crescent-like shape, with the convex portion facing roughly northeast and the concave portion southwest.  High of La Crescenta boys' team to an unprecedented third consecutive Division II team championship.

``It's really a special blessing,'' Loporchio said. ``It was a little more difficult this year and that makes it more special. We had to scratch and claw claw (klaw) a nail of an animal, particularly a carnivore, that is long and curved and has a sharp end.

The Falcons (251) finished ahead of Loyola (219). Hart of Newhall (133), which had taken second place the last two years, came in fifth.

(217 1/2) prevented Crescenta Valley (206) from making it a Falcons' sweep. The Harvard-Westlake of North Hollywood girls' team took sixth, scoring 120 points.

In contrast to the group effort exhibited by the Crescenta Valley boys' team, Alemany of Mission Hills junior Maureen Farrell - who will compete in two events at the Olympic Trials in August - accomplished much on her own. Farrell tied the section record in winning the 100-yard backstroke in 55.56. The record was set in 1992 by Beverly Hills' Meredith Booker.

Farrell (23.61) also won the 50 freestyle for the second time in her career. The time was a personal best and a Senior Nationals cut time, although she wants the Olympic cut time in the coming months.

``I wanted the meet record (in the backstroke) but I'm happy,'' Farrell said of her record-tying effort. ``I don't care

. I'll break it next year. Well, I'll just say I broke it.''

The Crescenta Valley boys' team can say it lived up to a promise the swimmers made to one another at the first team meeting this season. When Loporchio was not in the room, the swimmers agreed that the mission had to be sending Loporchio out on top.

``We said we'd be more unselfish this year and do it more for him than us,'' said junior James Jenkins, who won his first two section championships by winning the 50 (20.71) and 100 (45.32) freestyles.

``We wanted to send him out with style. He definitely deserves everything that came to him; we really love him and we're happy to give it to him.''

rivalry with Loporchio during his eight years at Crescenta Valley and Neale said he's learned to emulate Loporchio in certain aspects of their profession.

``He's probably one of the most knowledgeable high school coaches in the area,'' Neale said. ``He prepares his team the best and runs a successful high school program without affected the age-group program in the area. That's hard to do. And he instills that team attitude. I try to learn from him there.''
