 employment shopped their resumes Tuesday at the Daily News Job Fair. They straightened ties, spritzed hair, checked makeup and practiced broad smiles, pitching themselves to 17 companies. And even with the job market increasingly tight, they retained an air of optimism.

``So far, so good,'' said Courtney Shreve, a 37-year-old Northridge resident searching for an executive assistant position. ``It's so competitive now, with management competing for new positions as well, not just clerical workers.''

The former Homestore.com worker's been on the hunt for a month, now searching for ``a more steadfast industry.''

Most companies reported good leads, whether they were offering coffee shop management spots or customer service representatives. Some looked to fill positions in new stores, others simply looked to replace existing staff.

``It's hard to find people who actually want to work,'' said Robert Yelensky, Minolta Business Solutions' branch general manager in Woodland Hills. ``I've got a stack of resumes, but my sales staff still isn't working hard. People come in full of energy, but if the work gets tough, they stop producing.''

And so his resume pile kept growing higher as the unemployed kept searching. While waiting to have their resumes checked, the group brimmed brim

Kanti Malavia lost his job as a publications technician with Teradyne Inc. in Agoura Hills four months ago. To stay sharp, he's sought work as a temp, hoping that experience and his resume will get him in the door for his next employer. He figures his business and electronics background will be key assets.

``I've worked in the industry for 17 years,'' the 46-year-old Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  resident said. ``It seems like it's been a positive response so far.''
